Ranger Of The Sea (Yacht Ranger In America'S Cup)
Some authors would describe the Cup as belonging to affluent families whose interests were much on designing and building boats. They were instrumental in shaping the American yacht industry, including its dominance, since it began and up to the 1980's. So prestigious was the cup that up to the present its details and accomplishments of the best designs were showcased in today's International America Cup Class. Yacht Ranger in America's Cup The 1930's can is the era of the "J boats" and can aptly be described also as the era of Vanderbilt. Harold S. Vanderbilt was one of the most active personalities in sailing. He was skipper in 1930, 1934, and 1937, and principally backed some of the magnificent boats in the Cup like the Js, Rainbow, Enterprise, and Ranger - the latter he financed all by himself. When he joined the America's Cup in 1934, he nearly lost to Endeavor all because his boat, Rainbow, could not surpass the speed of the former. Rainbow won due to the acumen displayed by Vanderbilt and C. Sherman Hoyt, which helped their afterguard. Yacht Ranger in America's Cup was launched on May 11, 1937. The yacht Ranger in America's cup was the product of the pains that Vanderbilt took in order to build a faster vessel that he could sail during the cup of that year. Vanderbilt willingly spent (at that time) $500,000, which he financed entirely by himself. Indeed, the yacht Ranger in America's Cup was no ordinary boat. Built from top-grade steel with riveted plating, the Ranger dominated the 1937 America's Cup. The yacht Ranger was the first boat, and Cup Defender at that, which chose to break out from the convention of being built inside the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol. The designer of the yacht Ranger in America's Cup was withheld for decades until Olin Stephens broke the silence and told it was Sterling Burgess. However, some suspect that the boldness of the Ranger's design can be much more associated with Stephens. However, it wasn't immediately smooth sailing for the Ranger. On her way from Bath Iron Works, the yacht Ranger in America's Cup was struck with a disaster - its rigging turnbuckles gave up and were unscrewed at sea. This left the long spar with no support. The Ranger had to be supported by a temporary spar until the new design was constructed. Despite that, the Ranger made history by dominating the America's Cup of 1937. |
