Yacht Racing
Yachts are technically fast moving. That is due to the shallow water displacement of yachts compared to other hull types. Some yachts function even better in the open sea than larger crafts; that is due to the fin keel that allows more balance and, on some instances, more speed. Yacht racing are more predominant as competitive sailing than as motor yacht racing, thus putting emphasis on the skills of the skipper and his crew than of equipment superiority. And true enough, sailing with the wind only as the means of propulsion requires more of the skipper and the crews' navigation skill than of the motorboat engine's horsepower capacity. The same rings true with other types of yacht racing. Like endurance transoceanic races where sailing is still the favored propulsion than motor boats. Yacht racing have materialized in several forms: harbor or buoy racing that takes place on a harbor and uses buoys as markings for the courses and laps. Because the waters here are shallow, most yachts here would include smaller and less heavy yachts. Catamaran yacht racing has become a popular pursuit. Often the vessel is made very light that it seems to just skim the water surface with only minimal water displacement are made, thus achieving more propelling power with even the lightest wind. Sailboards too, are fast becoming a major interest though they hardly resemble yachts anymore. Offshore racing is yacht racing's answer to the number of extreme games that have risen to notoriety. One of the most prominent offshore races that happen includes the 2005 Rolex Transatlantic Challenge. It was open to larger, open sea faring yachts that are 70 feet or larger. Because the race was intended to span several days, even weeks on sea, provisions had to be taken as well as extra equipment. The 2005 Rolex Transatlantic Challenge was even to include a 256 foot square rig clipper that have already seen commercial cruising. There are other variants as well, like the Three Peaks Yacht Race of United kingdom. Much like the Olympic triathlon, the Three Peaks Yacht Racing would include sailing, cycling and running, an endurance race that was to take 3 days for completion. Because of the need for more speed and the least amount of cargo, yachts on yacht racing are naturally Spartan. Sometimes they would include cabins but would only contain the necessary provisions. And there are even some that don't carry motor engines. |
